About Us

About

Kinetica Online was created to serve as a vehicle for open-access to biomedical research results originating from Kinexus Bioinformatics Corporation, the academic laboratory of Dr. Steven Pelech (Department of Medicine, University of British Columbia) and their collaborators. It is also intended to become a forum to inform, teach and promote the exchange of observations and ideas broadly related to the study of cell regulation. Our goal is to provide information and stimulate discussion towards improving the research process and its outcomes for a better understanding and utilization of the molecular intelligence systems that operate in living cells.

Kinetica Online is produced and supported by Kinexus Bioinformatics Corporation. Kinexus is a systems proteomics/bioinformatics company that conducts in-house signal transduction research and has also been a provider of innovative proteomics solutions to over 1650 academic and industrial laboratories in the last 14 years. The research carried out by Kinexus aims to identify disease biomarkers and therapeutic drug targets, and characterize drug candidates. The future application of this knowledge should facilitate disease diagnosis and personalized therapies to improve human healthcare and welfare. The content in Kinetica Online reflects the efforts by many talented individuals at Kinexus, the University of British Columbia and various collaborators. Profiles of two of the principals responsible for Kinetica Online are shown below.

Dr. Steven Pelech

Kinetica Online’s senior editor and principal contributor is Dr. Steven Pelech. He is the Founder, President and Chief Scientific Officer of Kinexus Bioinformatics Corporation, and concurrently a full professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where he has been on faculty since 1988. Dr. Pelech was the principal founder of Kinetek Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and served as its President and C.E.O. for six years, and was one of the founding scientists of the Biomedical Research Center in Vancouver. Prior to his academic and industrial experience, he spent five years in post-doctoral training with Sir Philip Cohen at the University of Dundee in Scotland and Nobel laureate Dr. Edwin Krebs at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Pelech received his B.Sc. (1979; Honours) and Ph.D. (1982) degrees in Biochemistry from UBC. Dr. Pelech has authored over 220 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters about signal transduction, and he is one of the discoverers of the MAP kinase family of cell signalling proteins. He has served on grant review panels for the US National Institutes of Health, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the National Research Council of Canada, the Michael Smith Health Research Foundation, Genome Alberta, the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian National Cancer Institute, and the American Heart Association, as well as an external reviewer for 22 other agencies including the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Israel Science Foundation.
